In Nilüfer Okyanus Collage with our 5th grade students we decided to visit the zoo to learn our new unit “Animals” by seeing and feeling. We let our students to explore their environment and make new discoveries. This all leads to cognitive, language, motor and academic growth. While exploring a zoo, they go on an adventure full of running around, asking questions about the animals. Exploring their environment also helped students become more self-aware. They learnt what animals they like and don’t like. They learnt the way an animal smells, the sounds he makes, the way he feels and what he looks like. Zoo offered them a true multi-sensory approach to learning! The students walked around the zoo, they were exposed to words and concepts. It also encouraged dialogue between them. While walking around with our students, we labelled every animal and asked questions about them. This really helped increase their vocabulary and comprehension skills. It was an extraordinary lesson the students will not forget! At the end of the day our students of 5 A had full of fun and an amazing day.
